How To Prepare Your Toddler for Your Photo Shoot

WHAT IF THEY PITCH A FIT

Many parents of young children worry about how to best get their little one to behave during our shoot. And through my experience as both a parent and a photographer, I have developed a surefire, foolproof system to get the best out of every kid. It’s called the RWI Method. You just gotta “Roll With It”.

DO. NOT. WORRY.

This is key. One of the true joys of documentary family photography is that there are no expectations, only opportunities. If your child throws a tantrum, we get to show the love a mother or father provides when offering comfort, and the subsequent return of that love from the little one back to the parent. If he runs off to his room, he and I get to document all of his favorite toys and why they are so important to him. If she needs a power nap, we get angelic shots of her sleeping and then an intimate in-home coffee date between the parents.

IT’S TOTALLY NORMAL

Life is messy and unpredictable, especially with small children. There is no reason to expect that would change just because a photographer showed up. I am drawn to this style and these little people because it is a fast track to true, unvarnished realness. Noone will tell you how it is like a child will.

And.

It.

Is.

AMAZING

You just gotta roll with it is all.
